How the check digit is calculated
The last digit of every UPC and EAN is a check digit. Scanners use it to confirm the other digits were read correctly. Using the example code 05432122345:
- Add the odd-position digits
Positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11: 0 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 5 = 16
- Multiply by 3
16 × 3 = 48
- Add the even-position digits
Positions 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10: 5 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 15
- Add the two results
48 + 15 = 63
- Round up to the next multiple of 10
63 + 7 = 70, so the check digit is 7. If the sum already ends in 0, the check digit is 0.
For a 13-digit EAN the same method applies, with the odd and even positions counted from the right.
