UPC or EAN: which do I need?
Both are GTINs, and both scan at every retailer and marketplace. The only real difference is length and where each one is the local convention.
- EAN-13 is 13 digits and the standard outside North America: Europe, the UK, Australia, Asia and Latin America.
- UPC-A is 12 digits and the standard in the US and Canada. Every UPC is also a valid EAN with a leading zero.
- Amazon, eBay, Shopify and Etsy accept either code on every marketplace. Amazon.de and Amazon.co.uk listings are usually created with an EAN.
- Physical retail scanners worldwide read both symbologies.
Rule of thumb: sell mostly outside North America, choose EAN; sell mostly in the US and Canada, choose UPC. You never need both for the same product. Read Do you need both a UPC and an EAN?
