What the result means
It shows the prefix owner
Every UPC starts with a company prefix. The lookup returns the company that prefix was originally issued to, not the product or the brand currently using the code.
Codes from UPCs.com show the original prefix owner
That is expected and normal. Our numbers come from prefixes issued before 2002, which a court settlement confirmed are owned outright and can be sold on. The code is still unique to you and yours for life. Read why our codes have no renewal fees.
Frequently asked questions
The lookup shows a different company name than mine. Is my code valid?
Yes. The lookup reports the company the prefix was originally issued to. Codes bought from UPCs.com are issued once, to one customer, and are never reused, so the number is uniquely yours even though the prefix record names the original owner.
Can I check a code before I buy it?
You can check any code you already have. Codes we sell are assigned at the moment you order, so there is nothing to look up beforehand; every code we issue is guaranteed unique and unused.
Does a marketplace require the lookup to show my brand?
Most retailers and marketplaces only need a unique, correctly formatted code. If a specific marketplace asks for the brand name to match the registry record, contact us within 30 days and we will help, replace the code or refund the order.
